Many remotes replaced by one smart home remote

Wi-Fi gadgets are cheap to start with and expensive to live with. Here is why wired systems win in large homes — and when wireless is perfectly fine.

Every smart home starts with the same question: do we pull cables, or buy devices that connect over Wi-Fi, Zigbee or Bluetooth? For an apartment with a few lamps, wireless can be fine. For a villa with 60 lighting circuits, 12 AC units and motorized shades, the answer is almost always wired. Here is why.

1. Instant response

A wired keypad talks to the dimmer through a dedicated bus cable. The light reacts as fast as an ordinary switch. Many wireless and cloud devices first send the command to a server abroad and back — usually fast, but sometimes it takes a second or two, and sometimes nothing happens at all. People forgive that in a gadget. They don't forgive it in a light switch.

2. No dependence on the internet

A wired system runs locally. If the internet provider has an outage, scenes, schedules and sensors keep working. Only remote access from outside the house pauses.

3. Heat and batteries

Battery sensors on a sunny window or in a garage in August work hard. Batteries discharge faster in heat, and a villa with 40 battery devices means changing batteries somewhere every few weeks. Wired devices are powered by the system.

4. Thick walls and big houses

Concrete and block walls, metal-coated glass and long distances between rooms weaken wireless signals. Mesh networks help, but every extra hop is another potential failure point.

5. Security and lifespan

Consumer devices depend on the manufacturer's cloud and app. If the company changes its business model, your switch may lose features. Professional wired standards like KNX are designed for 20+ years of operation and are not tied to one vendor.

When wireless is the right choice

  • Finished apartments where opening walls is not an option.
  • Rented homes, where you want to take the devices with you.
  • Individual additions to a wired system — a sensor on a glass door, for example.

The cost question

Wired systems cost more on day one, mainly because of cabling and professional devices. But cables are cheap while walls are open, and wired installations rarely need replacing. Over ten years, the difference is usually much smaller than it looks — and the comfort is incomparable.

Questions clients ask most

Can I mix wired and wireless?

Yes, and we often do: wired for lighting, climate and shades, wireless for a few retrofit sensors or a portable speaker.
