A home cinema is the room where everything must work at once. In the UAE you also have to fight heat and dust — here is how to do it right.
A dedicated cinema room is one of the most rewarding spaces in a villa. It is also the most technically demanding — and in our climate, two extra enemies join the usual ones: heat and fine dust.
Picture: projector or TV?
A projector with a large screen gives the true cinema feeling in a dark room. In media rooms with windows, a large TV or a laser TV with an ambient-light-rejecting screen is often better. Room size and seating distance decide the screen size.
Heat: keep the equipment out
Amplifiers, processors and players produce heat. Put them in a ventilated rack outside the room or in a cooled technical space. Inside the room, equipment heat and the audience quickly warm the air.
Dust
Fine dust gets into projectors and fans. Use sealed or easily serviced projectors, filters on air intakes, and plan maintenance — especially after dust storms.
Acoustics
Hard surfaces — marble, glass, plaster — create echo. Acoustic panels, bass traps, carpets and upholstered seating make dialogue clear. Sound isolation keeps the film from disturbing the bedrooms.
Quiet cooling
The AC must keep the room comfortable without being heard during quiet scenes. We set a "Movie" mode with low fan speed and a slightly lower setpoint before the film starts.
One button
"Movie": lights fade, blinds close, the projector and sound system switch on. "Pause": lights to 20%. See home cinema design.
